VirusBloc FAQ
VirusBloc FAQ
What is Shentel's e-mail virus protection software, powered by Brightmail® and Symantec™?
One way to protect against viruses and worms is to turn on Shentel's VirusBloc e-mail virus protection software. This server-side program decreases the risk of Internet-borne viruses from attacking a computer. Mail is scanned before it reaches a users' mailbox, reducing the risk of a user opening an infected e-mail. Infected e-mails are cleaned and sent back to the user.
How does it stop viruses from getting to my machine?
VirusBloc combines the virus detection and repair technology from Symantec™ Security Response, with the proven rapid response messaging system filtering technology of Brightmail® to identify, redirect, clean and then deliver the e-mails.
Will I know when a potentially harmful virus is blocked or cleaned?
Yes. If the software detects a virus on your incoming e-mail or e-mail attachment, you will receive an e-mail message stating that either the virus protection software was unable to disinfect the virus, the virus infected file was removed or repaired, or the infected message had to be deleted.
Do I need this product if I have other virus protection software already?
Desktop anti-virus solutions do not necessarily scan all incoming e-mail attachments from all e-mail systems. It is recommended that users have both desktop anti-virus protection as well as Shentel's gateway anti-virus protection, in order to have the best chance at catching and cleaning viruses.
Will all viruses be detected?
No. There are several instances why a virus may go undetected:
- It could be a new virus for which rule definitions have not been created.
- A virus may be hidden in an encoded attachment, i.e. a password protected file.
- The virus may spread in a way other than via e-mail, i.e. a virus may be downloaded while surfing the net.
- The virus protection software has not been "turned on" by the user.
Do I have to pay a monthly fee for this service?
No. The virus protection service is offered to Shentel Internet accounts including dial-up, MultiLink PPP, ISDN and SpeedLink DSL at no charge.
