VirusBloc

Shentel's Email Virus Protection

What does VirusBloc do?
One way to protect against viruses and worms is to turn Shentel's e-mail virus protection software on. This server-side program powered by Brightmail and Symantec™ decreases the risk of Internet-borne viruses from attacking a computer. Mail is scanned before it reaches a users' mailbox, reducing the risk of a user opening an infected e-mail. Infected e-mails are cleaned and sent back to the user.

How does it stop viruses from getting to my machine?
The e-mail virus protection software combines the virus detection and repair technology from Symantec™ Security Response, with the proven rapid response messaging system filtering technology of Brightmail® to identify, redirect, clean and then deliver the e-mails.

    No further action is required.

  • This message will be sent if an attached file infected with a virus was detected and the file was removed.

    NOTICE:
One or more files attached to this message were found to contain a virus and Shentel's VirusBloc, removed the infected files.

    No further action is required.

  • This message will be sent if VirusBloc was unable to disinfect a virus.

    WARNING:
This message and any attachments have been processed by Shentel's VirusBloc. One or more attachments are believed to contain a virus. However, either the presence of a virus could not be confirmed or the attachment(s) could not be disinfected. We recommend that you DO NOT open the attached file(s) without first checking with your system administrator and/or the sender.

  • This message will be sent if a virus attachment has infected the e-mail itself, and the file had to be deleted by VirusBloc.

    NOTICE:
A file attachment sent to your e-mail address was infected by a virus and was deleted by Shentel's VirusBloc. Please ask the e-mail sender to clean the virus from the file before attempting to resend it.

These notifications can sometimes be confusing to users who might be asking "Why do I keep getting these virus notifications?" They are sent to notify a Shentel e-mail user that a virus infected e-mail or e-mails were detected by VirusBloc. If an infected attachment or e-mail cannot be cleaned, it is deleted before reaching your Inbox to prevent infection of your computer.

The messages are intended to inform Shentel users about the virus detection and are for information purposes only. No further action is required by the user or by Shentel Internet.
