High-Speed Internet Modems
Why do I need a DSL Modem?
Shentel High-Speed Internet service is a Digitial Subscriber Line, or DSL service. DSL works by dividing the frequencies carried by your telephone lines into two groups—higher frequencies are used for data, and lower ones for voice. Unlike dial-up Internet access which uses the same frequencies as voice calls, DSL allows the same wires to carry both the Internet connection and regular telephone calls at the same time because of this division. Special equipment called a "DSL Modem" needs to be installed in order for your computer to use the higher-frequency DSL signal.
How do I get a DSL Modem?
Shentel supplies a DSL modem to each customer when they sign up for service, based on the following terms. Customers may also provide their own modem or purchase one from a retailer of their choice, however Shentel is only able to provide technical support for Shentel-supplied modems. There are many different technologies used in DSL networks and each ISP is different, so customers interested in providing their own modem should contact Techncial Support to make sure their modem is capable of connecting to Shentel's service.
