Set up instructions for Shentel PCSmail™

Shentel PCSmail™ allows you to access your Shentel e-mail from select Sprint PCS Phone models. Now you can not only read your e-mail via your Sprint PCS phone, you can also reply to, forward, delete or save it—just as you would from your computer!

Click on the links below to get instructions on how to set up your Sprint wireless phone to receive Shentel PCSmail™. Note that Shentel PCSmail™ is only compatible with the phones listed below. You must subscribe to a Sprint PCS Vision Package in order to receive Shentel PCSmail™.

Sprint PCS Vision Phones Equipped for Shentel PCSmail™:

If you access your e-mail using a Sprint PCS Wireless Connection Card, you will also have to make a few simple adjustments on your computer. Use the instructions below to get started.

Using a Sprint PCS Wireless Connection Card

Note: To be used only if you are accessing your e-mail wirelessly using a Sprint PCS Connection card. This is a one time process and does not have to be repeated each time you connect wirelessly.

In Outlook/Outlook Express:

  • Select Tools from drop-down menu.
  • Select view/change existing e-mail accounts and/OR Shentel account from list.
  • Select Change/edit for Shentel e-mail account.
  • Incoming mail server should be: pop.shentel.net.
  • OUTGOING mail server must be changed to: asmtp.shentel.net. The “a” is the new addition to the address.
  • Select “More Settings”.
  • Select “Outgoing Server” Tab.
  • Check box: “My Outgoing Server Requires Authentication” and select “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”.
  • Select “Next” and “Finish”.

Using the Palm One Treo 650

The Treo 650 comes with an e-mail client called VersaMail. When setting up the e-mail client, you will need to know your Shentel username (EX: “username”@shentel.net) and your Shentel.net password.

  1. Go to Applications and select VersaMail.
  2. Open the Account Setup Screen.
    • Open the menus.
    • Select Accounts, and then select Account Setup.
    • Select New.
  3. Enter the basic account information:
    • In the Account Name field, enter a descriptive name.
    • Select the Mail Service pick list, and then select your email provider. Select Other if your provider is not listed.
    • If you chose Other, select the Protocol pick list, and then select POP or IMAP.
    • Select Next.
  4. Enter the account username and password:
    • Enter the username you use to access your email.
    • Select the Password box, enter your email account password, and then select OK.
    • Select Next
  5. If you chose a common email provider from the Mail Services pick list on the Account Setup screen, this screen is already filled in. If not, enter the names of the incoming and outgoing mail servers:
    • Enter your email address.
    • Enter the names of your mail servers.
    • Select Next
  6. Do one of the following:
    • Finish Setup - Select Done to finish setup and go to the Inbox of the account you set up, where you can begin sending and receiving email.
    • Set additional mail options - Select Advanced to set advanced mail options.
      1. Set incoming mail server options. Select any of the following:
        • Port Number - By default, the port number setting is 110 for POP and 143 for IMAP servers. You may need to change the port number if you choose to retrieve incoming mail over a secure server connection.
        • Use Secure Connection - To retrieve incoming mail over a secure (Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL) connection, check the Use Secure Connection box. If you check the box, the port number for incoming mail changes to 995.
        • Use APOP (POP accounts only) - Encrypts your username and password when they travel over the network. Some services require APOP to work properly, while others do not work properly if APOP is used.
      2. Select Next.
      3. Set outgoing mail options. Select any of the following:
        • Port Number - The default is 25, the port number most SMTP servers use.
        • Use Secure Connection - To send outgoing mail over a secure (Secure Sockets Layer, or SSL) connection, check the Use Secure Connection box.
        • Use authentication - Check the box if the outgoing server (SMTP) requires ESMTP authentication. If you select this option, username and password fields appear. These fields are already filled in based on the account information you entered. In most cases, the information displayed is correct; however, occasionally your authentication username and/or password is different from your account username or password.
      4. Select Done.

Using the Samsung i600

  • From the home screen, select Start.
  • Select option 1 – Inbox.
  • Select menu.
  • Select option 8 – Options.
  • Select Option 5 – Account Setup.
  • Select Menu and option 1 – New.
  • Fill in your name and e-mail address.
  • Uncheck “Attempt to obtain e-mail settings from Internet” and select “Next”.
  • Verify username is correct and enter password, then check box: “save password”.
  • Enter server type: POP3; Enter account name: Shentel; Enter Network: The Internet; Select “Next”.
  • Enter Incoming mail server: pop.shentel.net.
  • Enter Outgoing mail server: asmtp.shentel.net.
  • Check box: “Outgoing server requires authentication”.
  • Choose your messaging options and select “Next”.
  • Choose your mail receiving options and select “Next”.
  • Select “Finish”.

Using the Sprint PPC 6600/6601

  • Select the Inbox from the home screen.
  • Select “Accounts”.
  • Select “New Account”.
  • Enter your e-mail address and select “Next”.
  • Select “Skip” on Auto Configuration screen and select “Next”.
  • Enter your name, username and password, then check box: “Save password”.
  • Verify account type is POP3 and enter account name: Shentel, select “Next”.
  • Enter Incoming mail server: pop.shentel.net.
  • Enter Outgoing mail server: asmtp.shentel.net.
  • Leave Domain field blank.
  • Select “Options”.
  • Choose your messaging options and verify connection is: The Internet, select “Next”.
  • Check box: “Outgoing server requires authentication”.
  • Choose message display option and select “Next”.
  • Choose next message display option and select “Finish”.

Using the Treo 600

Note: You must have software v. 1.20 or higher on your Treo 600. The software upgrade is available at: palmone.com

  • Select “mail” icon from the home screen.
  • Select “other” from the account setup drop-down and select “Next”.
  • Enter account name, your name and e-mail address on “Name” tab.
  • Select “Server” tab.
  • Enter Incoming mail server: pop.shentel.net.
  • Enter Outgoing mail server: asmtp.shentel.net.
  • Select “Advanced” tab.
  • Check box: “Leave mail on server”.
  • Enter username and password for Outgoing mail server.
  • Select “Next” and “Done”
