Windows XP Settings

Overview

Here are the Shentel Internet settings for Windows XP.

Before beginning set-up, please be sure to read all information below to ensure an accurate set-up of your Shentel Internet connection. If you experience problems with your connection, you may need to check your configuration.

Shortcut to Shentel

If you do not have a shortcut to your dial-up connection on your desktop, please follow these steps first.

  1. From your start-up screen on your desktop, click the 'Start' button.
  2. Select 'Control Panel'.
  3. Select 'Network and Internet Connections'.
  4. Select 'Network Connections'.
  5. Right click with mouse on 'Dial-up connection for Shentel'.
  6. Left click on 'Create short-cut'.
  7. At the Windows message ('Cannot create shortcut here...') click Yes, and then click 'Close'.

Verify your settings

  1. Double left-click on the 'Shortcut to Shentel' on your desktop.
  2. Select 'Properties'.
  3. On the General Tab, verify that:
    • The modem is listed with a com port.
    • Area code and phone number are correct.
    • 'United States' is listed as the country.
    • There is a check mark next to 'Use dialing rules'.
     
    Select 'edit' and make sure the area code is listed. Nothing should be listed in any of the next boxes unless:
    • it is necessary to dial 9 for an outside line
    • it is necessary to disable call waiting
     
    Verify that 'Tone' is marked rather than 'Pulse' and make sure the correct dial-up number is listed at the bottom.

    Click 'OK', then 'Apply', and then 'OK' again.
  4. On the Options Tab, verify that 'Idle time before hanging up' is 'Never'.
  5. On the Security Tab, there should be a mark beside 'Typical'.
  6. On the Networking Tab, you should see 'PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet'. Select 'Settings' and verify that both 'Enable LCP Extensions' and 'Enable Software Compression' are checked. Click 'OK'.

    In the white block in the center of the page, there should be:
    • a check on Internet Protocol TCP/IP
    • a check on QOS Packet Scheduler
    • a check on Client for Microsoft Networking
  7. Highlight 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP', select 'Properties', and verify that:
    • There is a mark on 'Obtain IP address automatically'.
    • There is a mark on Use the following DNS server address'.
    • The primary DNS should be 204.111.1.35, and the secondary should be 204.111.1.36.
     
    Select 'Advanced'.

    On the General Tab, there should be checkmarks beside 'Uses default gateway on remote computer' and 'IP header compression'.

    On the Wins Tab, these options should be marked: 'Enable LM Hosts look-up' and 'Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP'.

    Click 'OK' and then 'OK' again.
  8. On the Advanced Tab, there should be no checkmarks. Click 'OK'.
  9. Be sure you enter your username and password in all lowercase letters. Place a check beside 'Save this username and password'. Select 'Dial to connect to the Internet'.
