Windows 2000 Set-Up Instructions

Welcome to Shentel Internet!

Before beginning set-up, please be sure to read all information below to ensure an accurate set-up of your Shentel Internet connection.

  1. From your start-up screen on the desktop click the 'Start' button.
  2. Select 'Programs'.
  3. Select 'Accessories'.
  4. Select 'Communications'.
  5. Select 'Internet Connection Wizard'.
  6. At the 'Welcome to The Internet Connection Wizard' screen, choose the option 'I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)' and click 'Next'.
  7. Setting up your Internet connection: Choose 'I connect through a phone line and modem' click 'Next'.
  8. Phone Number: Enter your area code (except Maryland users) and choose the number that is local to your telephone service area. To determine the local number in your service area, consult your telephone directory.

    Do not enter a '1' before the area code or long distances charges will be billed by your long distance carrier. Customers will be responsible for any applicable long distance charges if this occurs.

    The country name and code should automatically default to United States of America (1). A check mark should appear beside 'dial using the area code and country code'.
  9. Click on 'Advanced'.
  10. Connection Type: Choose 'PPP' (Point to Point Protocol); Logon Procedure: choose 'None'.
  11. Click on the tab at the top that reads 'Addresses'.
  12. IP Address: Choose 'Internet service provider automatically provides one'.
  13. DNS Server address: Choose 'Always use the following'.
  14. Enter the following numbers:
    • Primary DNS Server: 204.111.1.35
    • Alternate DNS Server: 204.111.1.36
    Click O.K., then click Next.
  15. Username: This needs to be entered in lower case without spaces before or throughout.
  16. Password: This needs to be entered in lower case without spaces before or throughout.
  17. Click Next.
  18. Connection: Delete information in box and type in Shentel, click 'Next'.
  19. Do you want to setup an Internet mail account now? Choose Yes, click 'Next'.
  20. Your Name: Type in your real name (for example John Smith), click 'Next'.
  21. Your E-mail address: Enter your username@shentel.net (for example john@shentel.net), click 'Next'.
  22. E-mail Server Names: Choose 'Pop3 server'.
    For Incoming mail: Enter pop.shentel.net
    For Outgoing mail: Enter smtp.shentel.net and click 'Next'.
  23. Account Name: Enter your username (see #16 above)
  24. Password: Enter your password (see #17 above), click 'Next'. Do not check 'Log on using secure password authentication'.
  25. Completing the Internet Connection Wizard: Remove check at 'to connect to the Internet immediately, select this box and then click finish', then click Finish.
  26. Double click on My Computer
  27. Double-click on Dial-Up Networking/click with the right mouse button on the Shentel icon, select 'create shortcut' and click 'Yes' to the message that begins with 'Windows cannot create a shortcut...' and close the Dial-Up Networking window.
  28. Double click on the shortcut to Shentel yellow telephone icon after shortcut opens, check that your username and password is correct. Click on 'Connect'. After connection, open your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, Netscape, etc.)
