Windows 98 Set-Up Instructions
Welcome to Shentel Internet!
Before beginning set-up, please be sure to read all information below to ensure an
accurate set-up of your Shentel Internet connection.
- From your start-up screen on the desktop click the 'Start' button.
- Select 'Programs'.
- Find Internet Explorer, click on 'Connection Wizard'.
- After the 'Welcome to Connection Wizard' choose the 2nd option:
'I have an existing Internet account' click 'Next'.
- Under Select an Option, choose the first option:
'You are accessing the Internet using an Internet Service Provider' click 'Next'.
- Setup Your Internet Connection: Choose 'connect using my phone line' click 'Next'. Windows may install specific files, or it may ask you to insert your Windows CD.

Phone Number: Enter your area code and choose the number below that is local to your telephone service area. To determine the local number in your service area, consult your telephone directory.
Do not enter a '1' before area code or long distances charges will be billed by your long distance carrier. Customers will be responsible for any applicable long distance charges if this occurs.

The country name and code should automatically default to United States of America (1). A check mark should appear beside "dial using the area code and country code," click 'Next'.
- Username: This needs to be entered in lowercase without spaces before or throughout.
- Password: This needs to be entered in lowercase without spaces before or throughout, click 'Next'.
- Advanced Settings: Choose 'yes' and click 'Next'.
- Connection Type: Choose 'PPP' and click 'Next'.
- Logon Procedure: Choose the first option 'I don't need to type anything when logging on' click 'Next'.
- IP Address: Choose 'My Internet Service Provider automatically assigns me one' and click 'Next'.

DNS Server Address: Choose the second option 'Always use the following'
Enter the following numbers:
- DNS Server: 204.111.1.35
- Alternate DNS Server: 204.111.1.36
Click Next.
- Dial-Up Connection Name: Enter Shentel and click 'Next'.
- Setup Your Internet Mail Account: Choose 'yes' and click 'Next'.
- Your Name: Type in your real name and click 'Next'.
- Internet E-mail address: Enter username@shentel.net (see #8 above) click Next.

E-mail Server Names: Choose 'My incoming mail server is a Pop3 server'
For Incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP) enter: pop.shentel.net
For Outgoing mail server (SMTP) enter: smtp.shentel.net and click 'Next'.

Internet Mail Logon: Choose 'log on using'.
POP account name: Enter your username.
Password: Enter your password from #9 above, click 'Next'.
Do NOT check 'Log on using secure password authentication'
- Friendly Name: leave as shown, click 'Next'.
- Setup Your Internet News Account: Choose 'no', click 'Next'.
- Setup Your Internet Directory Services: Choose 'no' and click 'Next'.
- Complete Configuration: Click 'Finish'.
- Double click 'My Computer' and then double click 'Dial-Up Networking' click with the right mouse button on the Shentel icon, select 'create shortcut' and click 'YES' to the message that begins with 'Windows cannot create a shortcut...' Now, close the Dial-Up Networking window.
- Double click on the 'Shortcut to Shentel' (yellow telephone icon), after shortcut opens check that your username, password and Shentel phone number are correct. Click on 'Connect'. After connection, open your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, Netscape, etc.)
