Windows 98 SE/ME Set-Up Instructions
Welcome to Shentel Internet!
Before beginning set-up, please be sure to read all information below to ensure an
accurate set-up of your Shentel Internet connection.
- From your start-up screen on the desktop click the 'Start' button.
- Select 'Programs'.
- Select 'Accessories'.
Note For Windows ME users: Then select 'Communications', click on 'Internet Connection Wizard' and skip to Step #6.
- Select 'Internet Tools'.
- Select 'Internet Connection Wizard'.
- At the 'Welcome to The Internet Connection Wizard' screen, choose the 3rd option 'I want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN)'and click 'Next'.
- Setting up your Internet connection: Choose 'I connect through a phone line and modem' and click 'Next'.

Phone Number: enter your area code and choose the number below that is local to your telephone service area. To determine the local number in your service area, consult your telephone directory.
Do not enter a '1' before area code or long distances charges will be billed by your long distance carrier. Customers will be responsible for any applicable long distance charges if this occurs.

The country name and code should automatically default to United States of America (1). A check mark should appear beside "dial using the area code and country code," click 'Next'.
- Click on 'Advanced'.
- Connection type: Choose PPP (point to point protocol).
- Logon Procedure: Choose none.
- Click on the tab at the top that reads 'Addresses'.
- Address: choose 'Internet service provider automatically provides one'.

DNS Server Address: Choose 'Always use the following'
Enter the following numbers:
- DNS Server: 204.111.1.35
- Alternate DNS Server: 204.111.1.36
Click Next.
- Username: This needs to be entered in lowercase without spaces before or throughout.
- Password: This needs to be entered in lowercase without spaces before or throughout, click 'Next'.
- Connection: Delete information in box and type in shentel, click 'Next'.
- Do you want to setup an Internet mail account now? Choose Yes, click 'Next'.
- Your Name: Type in your real name and click 'Next'.
- E-mail address: Enter username@shentel.net (see #8 above) click Next.

E-mail Server Names: Choose POP3 server
For Incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP) enter: pop.shentel.net
For Outgoing mail server (SMTP) enter: smtp.shentel.net and click 'Next'.

Account name: Enter your username (see #11 above)
Password: enter your password (see #11 above), click 'Next'.
Do not check 'Log on using secure password authentication'
- Completing the Internet Connection Wizard: remove check at 'to connect to the Internet immediately, select this box' and then click 'Finish'.
- Double click on 'My Computer'.
Note For Windows ME users: Then double-click on 'Control Panel'.
- Double click 'Dial-Up Networking' click with the right mouse button on the Shentel icon, select 'create shortcut' and click 'YES' to the message that begins with 'Windows cannot create a shortcut...' Now, close the Dial-Up Networking window.
- Double-click on the shortcut to Shentel telephone icon. After the shortcut opens check that your username, password, and Shentel phone number is correct. Click on 'Connect'. After connection, open your browser, (Internet Explorer or Netscape) or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, Netscape, etc.)
