Outlook 2000, Outlook Express, & Windows Mail Set-Up Instructions
Outlook Express is a simple e-mail program that is provided free with most versions of Windows. The new Windows Vista is bundled with Windows Mail, which is essentially the same as Outlook Express, but with a slightly different visual style. Outlook Express and Windows Mail are good choices for home users who just need e-mail functionality.
Outlook 2000 is part of the Microsoft Office 2000 suite of applications. It is geared toward businesses and includes a calendar, task list, journal, and other collaboration tools along with e-mail. Outlook is a good choice for professionals and users who need the additional functionality provided by the program. Microsoft Office (including Outlook) is not part of the standard Windows installation and is usually purchased seperately (though a trial version may come pre-installed on some PCs).
E-mail accounts are set up the same way in Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Outlook 2000. Newer versions of Outlook (such as Outlook 2002 and 2003) follow a different procedure.
- Open Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail.
- If you are asked whether to make the program your default e-mail program, click 'Yes.'
- If you are not automatically prompted to create an account, open the 'Tools' menu at the top of the screen and click on 'Accounts.' Then click on the 'Add' button and select 'Mail.'
- Enter your name. This is what will appear in the 'From:' field when you send an e-mail to someone else. Most people choose to enter their full name, but anything that will be recognized by the people you send e-mail to is acceptable. Click 'Next.'
- Enter your complete Shentel e-mail address, including the '@shentel.net' on the end. It needs to be in lowercase letters. Click 'Next.'
- Next to 'My incoming mail server is a' or 'Incoming mail server type' be sure to choose 'POP3.'
-
Enter the server information.
- Incoming Mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: pop.shentel.net
- Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server: smtp.shentel.net
Windows Mail users: Do not place a check next to 'Outgoing server requires authentication.'
- Click 'Next.'
- Your Account Name or Username should be entered in lowercase letters. Do not include '@shentel.net' here.
- Your Password must also be entered in lowercase letters.
- 'Save Password' should be checked, but nothing else on this screen should be. Click 'Next.'
- Outlook 2000 users: If you are asked how you connect to the Internet, select 'I will establish my connection manually' and click 'Next.'
- Click 'Finish.'
