Windows XP Set-Up Instructions

Welcome to Shentel Internet!

Before beginning set-up, please be sure to read all information below to ensure an accurate set-up of your Shentel Internet connection.

  1. From your start-up screen on the desktop, click the 'Start' button.
  2. Select 'All Programs'.
  3. Select 'Accessories'.
  4. Select 'Communications'.
  5. Select 'New Connection Wizard'. If a network connection already exists, the Network Connection screen will appear, then click 'Create a new connection'.
  6. At the "Welcome to The Internet Connection Wizard" screen, click 'Next'.
  7. At Network Connection Type: Choose the 1st option 'Connect to internet', then click 'Next'.
  8. At Getting Ready: Choose the 2nd option 'Set up my connection manually', then click 'Next'.
  9. At Internet Connection: Choose 1st option 'Connect using a dial-up modem', then click 'Next'.
  10. At Connection Name: Enter 'Shentel' in the ISP Name box, then click 'Next'.
  11. Phone Number to Dial: Use the number below that is local to your telephone service area. To determine the local number in your service area, consult your telephone directory. After entering the phone number, click 'Next'.

    Do not enter a '1' before the area code or long distances charges will be billed by your long distance carrier. Customers will be responsible for any applicable long distance charges if this occurs.

  12. At Internet Account Information: Enter your Shentel username and password. Re-type your password in the confirm password area.
    Note: These both need to be entered in lower case without spaces before or throughout. The first two options at the bottom should be checked. Make sure the last item is not checked, then click 'Next'.
  13. Completing the New Connection Wizard: Place check at 'Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop', then click 'Finish'.
  14. Double click the 'Shentel icon'.
  15. Select 'Properties'.
  16. Shentel Properties: Choose the 'Networking' tab at the top.
  17. At Networking tab: Click on 'Internet Protocol' (TCP/IP) in box so it is highlighted and click on 'properties'.
  18. At Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties: There should be a dot beside 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically' (the first option) and a dot beside 'Use the following DNS Address' (the fourth option) and enter the following numbers:
    Preferred DNS number: 204.111.1.35
    Alternate DNS number: 204.111.1.36
    Then click 'OK'.
  19. Put a check mark on 'Client for Microsoft Networks', click 'OK'.
  20. Click on 'Dial'. After connection, open your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) or your e-mail program (Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, Eudora, Netscape, etc.).
