Multiple Mailboxes

Setting Up Multiple Mailboxes

The following is information on setting up multiple mailboxes with Shentel account.
If you would like to have multiple e-mail addresses, you'll need to contact the Shentel Internet administrative offices by e-mail billing@shentel.net or by calling 1-800-SHENTEL and have them created. Many users have found that it is much easier to use different e-mail packages for each e-mail address, rather than set up one software package to use multiple addresses.

Listed below are the e-mail programs that Shentel supports for setting up multiple mailboxes. Most other e-mail programs either cannot do multiple mailboxes, or require extremely difficult procedures to set them up for multiple mailboxes. If you have any problems setting up multiple mailboxes with one of these supported programs, feel free to contact technical support.

These programs are freely available on the net and can be set up easily in nearly the same manner on Windows 95/98 or Windows 3.1x.

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0x

The following is information on setting up multiple mailboxes with Shentel account.
Note: This procedure works equally well for Win XP/95/98/00 and Windows NT 3.1x.
  1. Click on the 'Help' button and go down to About Microsoft Outlook Express. In the screen that comes up be sure that the version number is 5.0 or greater. The older versions of Microsoft Outlook Express do not support multiple mailboxes in the same program.

  4. To set up an additional mailbox, simply click the 'New' button. A New Identity window will appear. Enter in the name of the person who will be using this particular idenity. If you are setting this up for Bob's mail account, you will need to enter Bob's full name. After you have entered the name click 'OK'.

  5. You will receive confirmation that an identity has been created. Click 'Yes' when asked if you want to switch to the new identity.

  6. The next screen will read Internet Connection Wizard and it will ask you about setting up internet mail. Select the option to Create a New Internet Mail Account, then click 'Next'.

  7. At display name: Type in the name of the person using this mailbox This should be the same as step three above, then click 'Next'.

  8. The next screen will read Internet Connection Wizard and it will ask you about Internet e-mail address. Select the option that says I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use. For the e-mail address field, enter your username@shentel.net. The username would be the additional e-mail address that you requested from Shentel. Click 'Next'.

Netscape Communicator 4.0x

The following is information on setting up multiple mailboxes with a Shentel account.
Note: This procedure works equally well for both Win XP/95/98 and Win 3.1x.

The easiest way to set up multiple mailboxes is to use Netscape's Communicator 4.0x package. It's a free download and comes complete with a new world wide web browser that works with MS's Internet Explorer, the program you access by clicking on the Shentel Internet icon, and fully integrated e-mail.

What makes it useful for multiple mailboxes is it's User Profile Manager feature. This feature allows you to set up different user profiles for every person who wishes to receive their own mail. In addition, the user profiles also let each individual have their own set of website bookmarks and their own favorites settings. For this reason, Shentel recommends that you download and install Netscape Communicator 4 if you are planning to have multiple people using different mailboxes on the same computer.

Note: You may still use your current e-mail package and add Communicator for the additional mailboxes in your household. There is no need to change the main account's favorite mail program.

After downloading and installing Communicator by following the directions on the Netscape site, you should have an icon on your desktop that resembles a gold boat steering wheel. This icon loads Netscape and allows you to browse the web.

To access the mail area, click on the small mail icon on the lower right corner of the window. When you put your cursor over the icon, the name Mailbox will appear, letting you know you're about to hit the correct icon. To set up multiple mailboxes, close Netscape completely and follow these instructions:

  1. Click on the 'Start' button and go up to Programs. In the menu that appears, find the Netscape Communicator folder. Highlight that folder and another menu will come up. There should be a folder in this menu titled 'Utilities', highlight that and then click on the 'User Profile Manager'.

  2. The Profile Manager will appear and should only have one profile listed.  This is the profile that is automatically created when you first run the Netscape software. If you have set everything up properly, this profile should already be set up for your primary mail account and primary user. Now, all you need to do is set up the additional mailboxes.

  3. To set up an additional mailbox, simply click the 'New' button. A Profile Setup window will appear, with directions on what to type in. Simply follow those directions, entering in the name and pertinent information about the person who will be using this particular profile. If you are setting this up for Bob's mail account, you will need to enter Bob's full name and all of the datasheet information about Bob's e-mail account.

  4. When you are asked for the 'Outgoing Mail Server', type smtp.shentel.net in the field. When you are asked for the 'Incoming Mail Server', you want to enter pop.shentel.net in the field.

Also, make sure that when it asks for the mail server username, that you enter the username for the new mailbox, not the primary username. In other words, let's say you registered with Shentel as john@shentel.net and therefore your user name was John. Then you decided to set up your son Bobby with his own mailbox, named bobby@shentel.net. For your account, the username would be john, but for Bobby's mail account, the user name would be bobby.

Eudora Light For Advanced Users

The following is information on setting up multiple mailboxes with a Shentel account.
Note: The procedure for setting up Eudora Light on Win XP/95/98 and Win 3.1x is the same, but the exact step-by-step process is slightly different because Windows 3.1x uses File Manager instead of Windows Explorer for doing file and directory manipulation. You'll have to translate this procedure somewhat if you are attempting to set this up on Windows 3.1x.

Downloading Eudora Light is free. After doing so, install it on your computer and follow these instructions for setting up additional mailboxes. Keep in mind that for Windows 3.1x users, these instructions will need to be translated somewhat since Win3.1x looks different from Win95.

  1. Right click on the 'Start' button and choose Explore. Navigate this window until you find the folder (directory) for Eudora.

  2. Create a new directory in the same folder as Eudora by choosing 'File', then 'New'. Name it Eudora2.

  3. Copy or right drag and drop the \Eudora\eudora.ini file from the original directory to the newly created one.

  4. On the desktop, if that is where you created the Shortcut for the original Eudora mailbox, right drag and drop a copy of that shortcut onto the desktop. Choose copy from the menu that appears. A new copy of the original shortcut will appear. Rename it Eudora2.

  5. Right click on the shortcut once and choose Properties.

  6. Go to the Shortcut tab and find the Target Input box. Click the Target box once.

  7. Move the cursor to the end of the command line, hit the space bar on your keyboard, and type in the complete path to the eudora.ini file in the directory that you just created above.

Eudora For The MAC

The following is information on setting up multiple mailboxes with Shentel account.
Taken from Eudora's web site for FAQs: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/macfaq.html#multiple

Instructions for setting up multiple e-mail users on one Mac:

Note:You can do the following with any version of Eudora for the Macintosh:
  1. Run Eudora and configure it for one user as described in the Getting Started section of the Eudora User Manual.

  2. Quit Eudora.

  3. Drag the Eudora Folder out of the System Folder and onto another location on the hard drive.

  4. Replace it with an empty TeachText file called Eudora Folder. This step prevents another Eudora Folder from being created in the System Folder in the future. You can also replace the folder by selecting 'New Folder' under the File menu and calling it Eudora Folder.

  5. Rename the Eudora Folder anything you want, including the name of an individual.

  6. Make a copy of it and give the copy another name. This can be done for as many users as necessary.

All users now have their own personal mail folder and can launch their copy of Eudora by double-clicking on the Eudora Settings file in their own folder. An alias to that settings file also works well.

Note: Upon first starting Eudora, each user must change the POP account information to reflect his own POP account address.
